Garden Design, Manchester

Project Requirements

For this garden design project, the Green Acorn Landscape Design team were called to a property in Manchester to create an outdoor space suitable for entertaining. Our clients wanted to make better use of their garden, taking advantage of all the available space and create an environment suitable for hosting friends and family.

They had requested an outdoor fit pit that would become the main focal point in the garden design, creating a comfortable and attractive seating area for their guests.

Developing The Garden Design

Our clients booked a site visit with us to discuss their ideas for the garden design. During the site consultation, we discussed some rough ideas and assessed their current landscape to ensure we could meet their needs. We finally agreed on a design package and way forward to bring our client’s vision to life throughout the process.

We were chosen for this project due to the quality of our workmanship and our friendly, knowledgeable approach during the site visit.

Foundations And Sub Base Preparation

The first stage of this garden design process was digging the ground levels to put in the foundations for the retaining walls and steps. This was a challenging step for our team, as the site has poor access, making it difficult to get the materials needed in and out of the back garden.

During excavation, we removed almost 50 tonnes of material to create a solid foundation for the new garden design.

Along with the new retaining walls and foundations, we also added a soak hole for drainage. The garden sat roughly 800mm lower than the floor level of the home, which meant it was prone to flooding, and this needed to be remedied before any further installations could take place.

The retaining walls were to be a permanent feature of this garden design and were built from concrete blocks to accommodate them. Along with the construction of the walls, we also added all subbase materials across the landscape, as well as ducting to the underground services for the lighting installations that were to come.

Garden Design Details

Once the foundational and sub-base work was over, we began building the new garden design for our clients.

The build began with a paving installation, where we used porcelain tiles to create the main seating area. This would be the centre for the fire pit, and the same porcelain tiles were used as cladding along the floor and walls for a cohesive appearance.

The existing fence was still in good shape, structurally, but required an aesthetic upgrade to meet the new garden design. We used timber cladding along the new fence line, and enhanced privacy across the garden with pleached trees.

Outdoor lighting was installed along the fences, illuminating the whole garden and creating a comfortable, safe environment for our clients to enjoy at all hours of the day. This, combined with the bespoke fire pit, made the landscape fit for entertaining and hosting whenever our client desired.
